The trail
The first group of 100 people traveled the Oregon Trail in 1842. The trek was approximately 2,000 miles in length and ran through six states, starting in Missouri and ending in Oregon. The six states were Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho, and Oregon. The "Jumping Off Point" was in Independence, MO. This was the place were most expansionists took off. Groups would gather by the hundreds and wait days, weeks, and months before they gathered enough money to start the journey. The journey cost the travelers large amounts of money because of the far travel and the necessities needed. The beginning of the journey could cost anywhere from $500 to $1000! As you could imagine, there were a lot of decisions to make before making the journey. Some decision topics include- food, medicine, weapons and ammo, animals, spare tires, routes to take, and many more.
The journey was no easy task, the expedition lasted about 4 1/2 to 5 months. It was a non-stop journey, where every day meant a new endeavor.
